2023 was once again held in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. The venue did change but the results stayed the same. The NPSE trophy once again found it's way back to Todd Purtell. This tournament victory marked a THREE PEAT for Todd and once again proved the other three in this Tournament need to improve their golf game or consider taking up Pickleball full time.
The tournament started off with cocktails in Hills City South Dakota followed by a heated game of Bauchi ball in a South Dakota versus Minnesota. This would be the first time in this border battle Minnesota would be victorious over South Dakota in any challenge. The golf tournament usually starts with South Dakota teaming up in the practice round to play Minnesota. South Dakota has won 22 consecutive times. 23 if you count the win they had this year at Redrock Golf Course. It appears that Bauchi may need to be part of the tournament agenda in the future since Minnesota found a way to win.
We were afforded the luxury again of staying with Dr. Paul Eastman at his wonderful home in the Black Hills. This was deemed the official tournament headquarters.
This years practice round and South Dakota vs Minnesota opening round was held at Redrock Golf Course in Rapid City SD. This year we used handicaps to allow Minnesota a chance to win... This also proved futile as they were once again humiliated by the South Dakota team of Rick Noonan and Paul Eastman.
Tournament schedule this year was:
Practice Round at Red Rock
The tournament started at Elkhorn Golf Club near beautiful Spearfish SD. Second round was at Spearfish country club in Spearfish and the last 18 holes played on Sunday was Arrowhead country club.
Todd once again jumped out to an early lead and preceded to hold off all contenders throughout the 3 day event with no real challenge at the leaderboard.
This was the dedicated concentration of a Champion
All four of the participants in this event are from the Sioux Falls Cathedral district. They have been friends since 2nd grade and cherish the time to get together for golf and friendship.
Like most events in 2020 we are hoping that the COVID-19 Pandemic will not disturb the event. TheNPSE and it's E.S.P.N participants hope all will be safe and healthy this year.
In a cold fall October in 2002 a idea was born for a competitive golf outing between dear friends. It began with 4 grade school friends who attended St. Joseph Cathedral in the 70's. The idea was a result of a 48 year friendship.
"Let's reserve 4 days a year to play Golf." The friendship turned into a annual battle for a traveling trophy know as "TheNPSE". The battle takes place annually on remote Northern MN and Western SD golf courses. The winner is rewarded with the coveted NPSE traveling trophy and serious bragging rights for 365 days.
This years event will return to beautiful Hayward Wisconsin. Course locations have now been determined and it looks to be another grueling battle for theNPSE trophy. This years tournament will now be divided into 3 days. Due to age the governing commission decided it would be better to eliminate the 36 hole Saturday show down. This will allow the foursome to better relax and recuperate from over exertion. The Thursday practice round is yet to be determined.
In case of rain delay the scores will be used in the final card.
In past tournaments located in Wisconsin weather conditions can play a role in who is crowned the winner of the 4 day event. The wooded fairways in Wisconsin can create the need for additional golf balls to be purchased.
Paul is the "E" in ESPN. Paul has been one of the more consistent players around the green with a keen sense of touch with the wedge. The two time champion of theNPSE (2015, 2018) is excited this year to return to one of his more favorable courses.... Turtleback in Rice Lake WI. Paul has been know to walk a great distance of the course all while riding a cart.
Dave is the "S" in ESPN. Also know as the "BLADE", Dave is known for his calculated play on the green. His putting skills have allowed him to collect two valued tournament wins. (2011,2016). Dave will need to start off strong again this year to once again be on the leader board. He is most know for his crafty shots from the sand and innate ability to converse with anyone who will buy him a free drink.
Todd is the "P" in ESPN. Todd is by far the most consistent player on this tour. Even though he is seldom seen on the golf course only a few times a year he is always a threat to win theNPSE. He is best know for his consistent fairway drives. He is always calm, focused and very calculating around the course. Todd is a 7 time winner and host of this years ESPN. Rumor has it this year he may bring clubs from this century.
Rick is the "N" in ESPN. He is long off the tee when playing well. His sporadic inconsistency is clearly the largest obstacle to his game. This years results "Depends" on a consistent slow swing. He has somehow managed to win theNPSE 7 times and will be this years defending champion.
